Tuesday 28th February – windsurf ***** Mojacar – sunny and warm

F2 Ride 282, 38 cm fin, Tushingham Lightning 7.8 and 6.5 – wind SW 15/20
Max. 26.90 kts, ave. 25.03 kts, 26 km (15 miles), mile 22.37 kts , alpha 13.52 kts , hour 8.75 kts. 68 mins out.

Good night in our beach side spot just outside Mojacar apart from an hour when we had a group of noisy fishing boats making a row just before first light:( Woke to yet another 20-degree day with not a cloud in the sky:) Exercises in the sunshine. There was a steady stream of locals on mountain bikes and walking, making use of the coastal path as it is a public holiday here today. After breakfast we took the same path and took the binoculars in the hope of seeing the Gannets and were treated to a top display of driving with big splashes in the blue sea:) The rocky coastal path was good even if we had to dodge the friendly mountain bikers whizzing down. We came out near where I windsurfed yesterday and walked miles along the prom to what we thought was a chapel on the beach. It turned out to be the first aid centre but we used it as a turning point and headed back. We passed several bars with amazing names and lots of English people enjoying a cuppa or breakfast:) Families were out too both English and Spanish with kids on bikes and blades flying along the top cycle path:) There was even a couple of men braving a swim in the med, I went as far as a paddle but the water is a bit nippy! As we reached the end of the prom the kitesurfer I sailed with yesterday arrived and the breeze did seem to be filling in:)
Back at the van after a knackering but lovely 6 miles walk the wind had kicked in in and another windsurfer was out at the other end of our beach. After a quick bite to eat I rigged as yesterday 7.8 on the trusty 282 and headed out. I beat up to the fort but the wind was getting too much for the big sail so had a top broad mile out and back to change to the 6.5. Mag was enjoying her time out of the wind and sun in the van and had texted our son Rob several times and phoned our best friend Mary in Felixstowe:) I had a few runs with the 6.5 including my fastest of the day just under 27kts with a slightly better average too but the wind was very gusty and then went offshore and I was lucky to get back to the sandy section of beach before the rocks started!
I had a well-deserved cuppa and we watched the amazing Gannets driving for fish, the Shearwaters I spotted yesterday turned out to be Razorbills as I nearly ran one over when sailing! A read on the beach as the sun set behind the hill then a nice pasta tea.
